Raising the deductible limits on collision and comprehensive coverage lowers monthly insurance premiums. By taking on more financial responsibility in the case of an accident, a driver lowers day to day costs. A driver must be ready, however, to absorb these costs if an accident occurs. Note that in some cases where a driver is not at fault, other insurance provisions or companies may cover some or all deductible amounts. Check with your agent or broker to determine what applies to your specific policy.
The chart above illustrates the average auto insurance premiums across Canada. Typically the province of Ontario is characterized by the highest auto insurance rates. Quebec, as a rule, has more affordable car insurance premiums since the health part of the insurance (e.g. bodily injuries) is covered by the government. Not all provinces allow customers to choose from a variety of insurers. Three provinces have crown companies being the only source of vehicle insurance:

Many universities and colleges have partnerships with a major insurance company to provide cheaper car insurance to current students as well as alumni. Call your school’s representative to find out what benefits you can get, and as always make sure you still compare their quotes in case you can save more money elsewhere.

Review your deductibles: If you have collision and comprehensive coverages included in your auto insurance policy, see how much your deductibles are. If they are set at $500, increasing them to $1,000 will typically save you about five to 10 per cent. Only increase them however, if your budget allows for it because the deductible is what you’ll have to fork out should you need to submit a claim.
In general, the cancellation fee is a percentage of your premium and the percentage charged is determined by how far along you are into the term of your policy. For example, you’ll pay more if your current policy is only four months old than if you’re nine months into your coverage. The cancellation fee charged is basically a sliding scale that typically ranges from two to seven per cent.
If either of you are university graduates, you'll likely get a discount through TD. When you talk to them, ask them for their discounts or tell them of any school you go to, association you belong to or employer you work for. One might have a discount with them. The next time you look for car insurance, try Kanetix's search engine. They generate top insurance quotes. I do it once a year then go the top five places and use their specific search for quotes. Takes like an hour each year, but it's saved me hundreds.
If your driving licence originates from a country that has an agreement with Canada and can be converted into a Canadian licence, there is also the question of how long you can drive with your out-of-country driving licence before you have to convert it, and these times vary by province. Here are examples from Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia:
Other discounts can include vehicle amenities, such as using snow tires for winter driving or adding approved anti-theft devices. Usage-based insurance programs are on offer from some insurers. These track how your vehicle operates. Factors such as acceleration and braking report through a smart phone or diagnostic device. Participating insurance companies offer a discount when you sign up for the program and good driving habits potentially generate further savings.
Another important aspect of buying car insurance at a rental location – it probably has much lower insurance limits than your personal car insurance. Let’s say, if you have $2,000,000 liability on your personal policy, an insurance policy purchased in a rental location might only have the minimum required by law – and that’s just $200,000 in Ontario.
Not all collisions affect your insurance rates, but crashes where you’re deemed at fault will drive up your premiums. Insurers care about your three-year driving record, because that’s how long convictions stay on your driving record. A single speeding ticket may not have a huge impact on your premiums, but repeated infractions could cost you – and serious driving crimes that result in court convictions can really hit hard.
*75% of Kanetix customers in Ontario who participated in the survey said Kanetix helped them identify an average savings amount of $610 (June – November 2017) on their car insurance. Mortgage Savings: Based on the present value of monthly savings over the mortgage term (3-years). The monthly savings is the difference in monthly payments between the lowest and third lowest mortgage rates from major Canadian lenders as of April 24, 2012. These rates are for a 3-Year closed mortgage for $350,000, with an amortization period of 25 years, in the province of Ontario, for a borrower with a good credit rating.
Many Ontario drivers have additional third party insurance coverage. This is a wise move since the provincial requirement is only for $200,000. Settlements from serious accidents often exceed this amount. Any amount in excess of insurance coverage remains the responsibility of the driver. To guard against serious financial strain, it’s common to add liability coverage to $500,000 and beyond.
If you are in your twenties and either working or in school, you can qualify for various discounts, including discounts for good marks at university or college. Teenagers are usually covered under family car insurance plans, and any age group can take advantage of discounts for taking driver’s education classes – which also help you get your graduated licence faster in Ontario.

As a driver, you can't control these particular changes, but you can control maintaining a clean driving record. Next to comparing rates, this is the best way to keep your auto insurance rates down. However, note that your rates can also increase or decrease if you move, change your commuting time, get a new vehicle, add another driver to your policy, and so on.
Those that will continue your driving record: Some companies will consider your previous experience and will offer you a rate based on how long you have been driving, no matter where you got your on-road experience. Check with a broker to see which companies consider previous out-of-Canada experience so you can reduce your chances of a denial and increase your chances of getting the best possible rate.
Usage-based insurance (UBI) is another new technology that is also becoming more popular where you pay your insurance based on when and how you drive. You install the necessary tracking device on your car and it, along with a GPS, monitors your driving behaviour. The data is examined when your policy is up for renewal, and usually looks at the following:
This assessment – of your recommended insurance coverages – is based on your responses to the preceding questionnaire. The coverages you see are those determined to be the most important for you – but are by no means the only options available. Discounts may offer another path to lower auto insurance prices for Brampton drivers. Most, if not all, insurers offer discounts, incentives and price breaks when a driver meets conditions. Insuring more than one car or combining home and auto insurance with one company may qualify you for discounts on those policies. Similarly, insuring more than one driver may lead to price breaks.
Comprehensive: With this option, you’re covered for any threat or danger other than collision, including theft*, damage or loss caused by vandalism, projectiles, and falling or flying objects such as stones kicked up by a truck in front of you. The important thing to remember is that this coverage applies to your vehicle only, not you or your passengers.
