Erie is the cheapest insurance company, and arguably the most reliable insurance company as well. They score points by allowing customers to start their quote online, which we personally found to be a streamlined and fast process. Erie also scored the highest marks from the number of policies they offer. Erie offers pet coverage, free accident forgiveness, free vanishing deductibles, roadside assistance, and many more, essentially giving its customers a degree of flexibility not even found amongst the largest insurers. Customers of Erie may also be eligible for its Rate Lock program. This is a unique program where customers won't see their rates increase except for three reasons: you move to a different area, add or remove someone from your policy, or add or subtract a car. Lastly, despite its smaller size, Erie offers the same types of discounts larger national insurers provide such as bundling, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft, young driver and senior driver among others.
Though Progressive may not have the highest number of discounts, it offers an impressive range. You’ll receive effortless deductions for things like opting for paperless billing, making monthly payments on time, and signing a new policy early. The company offers deductions we didn’t find with any other provider, including one for drivers under 18, who will likely face some of the highest rates of any demographic. Progressive also boasts a safe driver discount that averages 31% savings. Though this likely won’t benefit those riskier drivers, it’s incentive to improve.
A cover note is an interim document, which is issued by the insurer until a final insurance policy can be provided. The cover note will have the name of the insured, the insurer and details of the coverage. A cover note is usually valid for a period of 60 days and the insurer issues the Certificate of Insurance before the expiry of the cover note. It enables the purchaser to cancel the policy, and receive a refund on the condition that a claim is not yet made.
We found Progressive was the most affordable car insurance rates after a recent accident compared to the many auto insurance companies we surveyed. From the $1,241 average we state above, rates increased by 29% after an at-fault accident. While that may still seem high, it was the smallest rate increase we saw of any company including Erie, State Farm, GEICO and American Family.
A car insurance policy will be valid for a particular period. After this period, the insurance policy lapses. It is advisable to renew it in time so as to benefit from the No Claim Bonus (NCB). If policy lapses and you renew it within 90 days you may still benefit from the NCB. Post 90 days, you need to initiate the process by filling details all over again and getting your car inspected by the surveyor. Also, as the NCB is lost it would result to higher premiums.
Comprehensive protects against theft or damage that isn’t from a collision with another car or object. That means things like earthquakes, fires, vandalism, and damage caused by animals. If you’re in an area with high rates of such environmental factors, it’s important to protect yourself with comprehensive coverage — you’re likely paying more in your premium for them as is.
The amount of coverage you want covered for bodily injury and property damage liability insurance is something to carefully consider. Given today’s medical and repair or replacement costs, you want to make sure that you are prepared with adequate protection. It is highly suggested that you purchase enough coverage to insure your own financial security in case of an accident.

You won’t qualify for every discount, since some depend on factors beyond your control, like your age or the safety features installed in your car. However, others are based on behaviors like switching to paperless billing or having multiple cars on your policy. We prioritized deductions like these since more drivers will be able to use them. If you’re new to auto insurance, or don’t totally understand the details of your policy, you can find a guide for that on Allstate’s website. There are articles, videos, and infographics that clearly detail how to read your policy, how to compare rates, and how to save money. Even if you don’t end up signing with Allstate, we still recommend checking out its website for the resources alone. If you’re a customer, you can use its online portal to file a claim, adjust your coverage, alter your deductibles, and add new drivers and vehicles.
You may wish to make changes to your existing car insurance policy, and these changes are done through an endorsement. An endorsement is a written evidence of the changes made in the policy. If you need to make any changes then you can submit a letter to the insurer with the necessary proofs. This helps you obtain an endorsement, which can affect the premium to be paid for the policy.
As you get your instant quote, Nationwide will help identify discounts on car insurance that might apply to your policy to save you money. Depending on where you live, you may qualify for lower rates when you have multiple Nationwide insurance policies or have an accident-free record. If your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft device or passenger restraint system, you may save even more. You may also earn a discount through the SmartRide program, which is a usage-based program that gives members feedback to help encourage safe driving.
