According to a study done by InsuranceQuotes and Quadrant Information Services, drivers saw an increase average of 44% after they filed a claim (worth $2,000 or more) — meaning your premium could nearly double just for using your insurance. The study found that increases will range by state, depending on the local regulations that affect how insurers set a premium. In California, the average rate increase is 63%, while in Maryland it’s only 21%. If you have a minor repair with a cost that’s close to your deductible, it may not be worth filing a claim. But don’t hesitate to use your insurance when you need it most; after all, that’s what it’s for.
We collected quotes from a variety of insurance companies across 2,700 towns and cities in the U.S, for 128 insurance companies. Our sample driver was a 30 year old male who drove a 2011 Toyota Camry. To obtain quotes, we kept parameters for getting coverage the same, such as that he was single, and had a clean driving record. The only parameter that changed was the zip code where he lived in the U.S. The amount of coverage we opted for gave our driver bit more than what is required of state minimums.
NerdWallet averaged rates for 40-year-old men and women for 20 ZIP codes in each state and Washington, D.C., from the largest insurers, up to 12 in each state. “Good drivers” had no moving violations on record and credit in the “good” tier as reported to each insurer. For the other two driver profiles, we changed the credit tier to “poor” or added one at-fault accident, keeping everything else the same. Sample drivers had the following coverage limits:
Yes, there is an add-on cover for car accessories. Add-on cover for car accessories is an attractive benefit offered by a number of car insurance providers that gives additional coverage for your car accessories. On the payment of an additional premium, you can ensure that you are covered of the cost incurred on your car accessories that most car insurance policies do not cover. Hence, this is beneficial and a cost-effective advantage for car owners.

Erie is the cheapest insurance company, and arguably the most reliable insurance company as well. They score points by allowing customers to start their quote online, which we personally found to be a streamlined and fast process. Erie also scored the highest marks from the number of policies they offer. Erie offers pet coverage, free accident forgiveness, free vanishing deductibles, roadside assistance, and many more, essentially giving its customers a degree of flexibility not even found amongst the largest insurers. Customers of Erie may also be eligible for its Rate Lock program. This is a unique program where customers won't see their rates increase except for three reasons: you move to a different area, add or remove someone from your policy, or add or subtract a car. Lastly, despite its smaller size, Erie offers the same types of discounts larger national insurers provide such as bundling, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft, young driver and senior driver among others.
Car insurance will prove a benefit if you ever experience a wreck, vehicle theft or other unpreventable problem on the road. The policy can help pay for such concerns as your own vehicle damage, injuries and related costs. Coverage can also pay for the damage you cause others if you are deemed at-fault in a wreck. With your policy, you can reduce your chances of significant financial losses after an unfortunate accident.
What’s more, if one of the drivers on your policy is under 25 and is a full-time student with good grades, has completed the insurer’s teenSMART driver education program, or is attending school within 100 miles of where they store their car, they’ll qualify for Allstate’s “smart student” discount. Because younger drivers are riskier to insure, a price break like this is usually hard to come by.

If you are or were in the military, or if your parents, parent-in-law, or spouse was in the military you are eligible for USAA auto insurance, and they may just be the best company for you. USAA scores 5/5 stars for the both shopping experience, and claims handling process in the J.D. Power study. They do particularly well on how you can report your claims to the company. You should also be highly satisfied with their final settlement claims. For more information, read here.
After our analysis of 2,700 cities and 128 companies, we found that Erie was the most affordable major insurer in the country with an average yearly rate of $1,052 based on our sample driver - about 31% cheaper than the national average across every insurer. The very largest of the five is GEICO, the second largest auto insurer in the U.S. by market share.
When building your policy, you may need to look beyond the basics. For example, protections like umbrella coverage — which pays liability costs higher than the limits of your standard auto policy — help provide an extra layer of financial security. Others, like pet injury — which helps with veterinary expenses stemming from an accident — are geared toward dog owners. No single insurer will offer coverage that’s perfect for everyone, so we preferred the ones that have plenty of options.
Why choose Nationwide auto insurance? As a Nationwide auto insurance policyholder, you’ll enjoy great customer service online or over the phone, as well as through our vast network of Nationwide agents and Nationwide-affiliated independent agents. But don’t take our word for it. We post our customers' auto insurance reviews online for you to read. Cheap auto insurance companies don’t do that.
The simplest way to lower your monthly rate is to raise your deductible. You’ll have to pay more out of pocket if you ever file a claim, but that can be worth it depending on your driving record and your saving habits. You can also look at the discounts your insurer offers and make adjustments to qualify for them. Things like adding safety features, opting for an e-bill, or taking a safety course are all simple actions that qualify as discounts for some companies.
Unless your plan includes some form of accident forgiveness, filing claims of any size will cause your premium to go up. For small repairs, the price to fix it may be less than the increase in your premium — a chipped windshield, for example, can often be repaired for under $100, while a subsequent increase of just 10% on your premium could run you well over that amount in annual insurance costs. Since repairs are a one-time expense, it may save you money over time to sweat the small stuff yourself.
Personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payment are similar to bodily injury liability but instead cover the costs of injuries to yourself and any passengers in your vehicle. You certainly don’t want to be underinsured when it comes to your own medical attention — choosing PIP helps protect you from financial damages that might come as a result of physical ones.
